Education Week was a huge event at Merimbula Public School this year. An Open Day was held on Tuesday, July 30. Students showcased the school's range of creative and performing arts programs as parents and guests watched them complete visual arts activities and participate in drama and music lessons in their classrooms.
An Education Week Assembly was also held on Open Day as another way of showcasing student talent and staff dedication. The School Choir, Boy's Vocal Group, Girl's Vocal Group, Hip Hop Dance Group, Band and Recorder Ensemble performed a range of items. The band, dance and vocal students were excited to share their skills with their peers prior to their evening performance at the Sapphire Coast Learning Community (SCLC) Performing Arts Festival at Eden Marine High School. The Recorder Ensemble however shared only a small part of their repertoire, saving their other songs for their Opera House performance later this month.
Two students from every class also participated in an induction, becoming Student Representative Council Members for Semester 2. They will now meet fortnightly to organise fundraising, share ideas about school initiatives and coordinate student events with the support of the School Leaders.
Parents and caregivers were thanked for their ongoing commitment to the school and its programs by being provided a special afternoon tea. This was followed by an enthusiastic display of Jump Rope for Heart moves by Kindergarten and Year 2 students.
The rest of the week saw the school recognised for high achievements. A talented student composer performed at the Wednesday night SCLC showcase and over 30 students competed at the Zone Athletics Carnival at Bega Valley Public School, with our school coming second overall.
Five staff members were also recognised for high achievements. A teacher received her Teacher's Accreditation and four teachers were recognised for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the 2013 Illawarra South East Region's annual awards ceremony, the fourth year in a row the school has been represented at the event!
