The last week of May was a big week for four Merimbula Public School boys when they represented the South Coast at the AFL State Carnival. The boys travelled to Barooga on May 28 to join their team mates from schools as far away as Wollongong to play in the three day carnival between May 29 and May 31.
Thirteen regions and groups of students were represented at the State Carnival: Riverina, Mackillop, Catholic Independent Schools, Sydney East, South Coast, Sydney West, North Coast, Sydney South West, Sydney North, Barrier, Polding, Western Region and the Hunter. All teams played well and up until the final round both the South Coast and Riverina teams remained undefeated.
The Merimbula Public School boys played extremely well for the South Coast side, assisting them to get some great results. First they defeated Polding 40 to 23, then the North Coast 76 to 26 followed by the Hunter 71 to 14. The South Coast team also defeated Sydney North 32 to 16, which had everyone talking about the strength and skills of the boys from the South Coast.
Unfortunately the boys did not win their game against Sydney East. They were defeated 27 to 18, eliminating them from the finals. The rain didn't stop the boys from winning their final game though, 22 to 13 against Sydney West.
Winning 5 out of 6 games meant that the boys came first in their pool and 5th overall in New South Wales. An amazing feat!
Another amazing feat was achieved by Heath! Heath was a standout at the carnival, resulting in him being selected for the NSW Primary School Boys' side. He will now fly to Darwin to represent NSW at the National AFL Championships in August.
