Mie, a Year 6 student at Merimbula Public School, made her school and the Illawarra South East Region very proud on April 5 when she won a silver medal at the Primary School Sports Association's State Swimming Carnival at the Olympic Park Aquatic Centre in Sydney.
Mie came second overall in the 50 meter Freestyle event for 13 year old students. This follows her outstanding success at the school, zone and regional carnivals held throughout the Term 1.
"We are all so proud of her" said Mie's mother Hanne who moved to Merimbula with her family last year.
"It is an outstanding achievement" said Michelle Hulme, school principal. "Mie did so well. It can be daunting for students to swim in the Olympic Pool. They see their name on the huge screen, next to the name of their school, and then they have to concentrate on swimming their fastest past all of the little windows under the water where camera people were during the Olympics. Mie is a great student and is a very talented swimmer".
Mie's achievements have made her peers and teachers very proud. Her amazing result now means that she gets invited to the National Swimming Championships which will be held in Perth later this year.
