Last Friday, students from Merimbula Public School participated in a workshop to create an artwork for this year's NAIDOC week celebrations.
The NAIDOC theme for 2010 is ‘Unsung Heroes – bridging the gap by leading their way'.
The students brainstormed the meanings behind this theme and spent time familiarising themselves with contemporary Aboriginal artists and their works.
The students observed how these contemporary Indigenous artists express themselves in new and different artworks whilst still taking inspiration from traditional Aboriginal art.
With the help of Jodie Ahmat, mother of two of the participating students, the children experimented with different painting techniques and symbols to create their paintings.
The children will be submitting their artworks into a nationwide competition. The winner's artwork is to be used as the 2010 NAIDOC week poster. Good luck Merimbula Public School!
