Merimbula Public School Are South Coast AFL Champions!

Once again Merimbula Public school's AFL team have been crowned South Coast Champions as part of the NSW Primary School Sports Association AFL State Knockout Competition. Merimbula's team has a proud tradition of reaching the State Final. They have made it to the top 4 teams in the State for the past 4 years in a row. If they continue to play as they have so far this year, they are certainly on track to do so again.

The Merimbula team, which consists of boys and a girl from Years 5 and 6, played against Vincentia Public school's highly skilled team on Monday August 9 at Berrambool Oval. In perfect conditions, Merimbula played incredibly well as a team. They ended the game victorious with a score of 68 - 24. The team were commended by their opposition for their excellent teamwork, skill and sportsmanship.  "Their teamwork and skills are fantastic considering that most of the team have never played AFL before" commented Ms Leah Martin, Merimbula Public School teacher and the team's manager on the day.

Principal, Mrs Michelle Hulme, also commented "The team has done so well together, developing their AFL skills very quickly due to the support that they have been given from the staff, parents and community. Mr Peter Murphy and Ms Leah Martin, both teachers at our school, have trained the students throughout the year with talented coach / parent Mr James Burch. The students have also participated in AusKick Gala Days and Development Days supported by AFL Australia and the local clubs. Parental support has also been great. The team always draws a big crowd".

Merimbula will now play against the Western Sydney Champions at Berrambool Oval in a couple of weeks time to determine whether or not they will travel to Wyong for the State Final on September 20, 2010.
