We have brought home the trophy again! For the third year in a row, Merimbula Public School are the South Coast Tennis champions in the Victor J. Kelly State Tennis Knockout Tournament.
Last term, our school tennis team defeated Milton Public School. The games saw experienced competitors, and 2016 State Champions, Maka Ofati and Hollie Staight joining forces with school team first timers Luka Cowles and Mackenzie Morse. Our students then travelled to Batemans Bay last term, to compete against Cambewarra Public School in the 5th round of the tournament. It was a very close match up with Merimbula eventually winning by 5 sets to 3.
Maka comfortably won his singles match while Hollie had a narrow loss in hers. Luka fought hard to beat Cambewarra's number 1 boy and, in her first ever singles win and only her second competitive match ever, Mackenzie triumphed 6-3. The doubles matches were exciting with the boys winning 6-3 and the girls just losing 6-4. One mixed doubles matchup included a win of 6-1 and the other a narrow loss of 7-5.
We now move on to the quarter finals as South Coast champions, where we will play a school from Southern Sydney for the chance to make it to State Finals day in Sydney which takes place in late August.
