Year 1
Clean Up Australia Day. This is the rubbish collected around our community - yuck!

1M is reading 'There's a Sea in My Bedroom' but it looked more like "There's a Shark in Our Classroom" when one of the Stage 1 parents bought in a Mako shark's jaw to show us. Look out 1M!

Your child begins Year 1 with familiar faces and school routines.
Year 1 is the start of Learning Stage 1 and will continue until the end of Year 2. This year students become more involved in school routines and continue to develop their social skills as they interact with other children in the classroom and playground.
Accelerated Literacy

These photos show students participating in Accelerated Literacy sessions. Merimbula Public School has a strong focus on using this pedagogy. It involves closely studying a variety of texts and the author techniques used in these texts.
The morning literacy session encompasses reading, writing, spelling and talking and listening. Some the activities include looking closely at spelling using chunking and sounding words onto whiteboards. These sessions see students highly engaged in quality learning.

Transformations are an excellent way for students to look at sentence order and author intention. Grammar, punctuation and spelling can also be chosen as a focus. These sessions are then followed by reconstructed writing and eventually independent writing. Our staff have seen some excellent results from students since this program has begun.
Most staff at Merimbula Public School are Accelerated Literacy trained or are involved in training. We also have two teachers Jayne Wilson and Janelle Hodsdon who are trained as Accelerated Literacy Mentors to support our staff.
